Why Contrax
Eight tools in a trench coat is not a system.
Most contractor software is a bundle. Separate products sharing a login. You are still the thing carrying numbers between them — the estimate into the invoice, the hours into payroll, the receipt into the books.
Without the connection, you don’t get the automation. That is the entire argument, and it is worth two minutes.
The proof
Follow one number.
A bathroom gut in Whitby. Priced once, on a Tuesday. Here is every place that number shows up afterwards — and how many times anyone retypes it.
Times a human retyped that number: zero. In a bundle, that is six copy-pastes and one of them is wrong by Friday.
The difference
Bolted together vs. grown together.
A bundle
Separate products joined at the edges. It works until something has to travel — a sync that runs hourly, a field that doesn’t map, a change order that updates the contract but not the budget.
You are the integration.
One spine
Same modules, one set of data underneath. There is no integration step because there is nothing to integrate. It was one system from the first line of code.
The system does the carrying.
Contrax was built inside a working renovation company in Oshawa, to run that company. Estimating first, then the jobs, then the money, then the field — each part added because the one before it had a loose end. That is a slower way to build software. It is the only way to end up with a spine instead of a bundle.
The money
What the stack actually costs.
The time saved is obvious. The monthly number is the one worth doing on paper.
Straight about the bookkeeping
Contrax does not replace your accountant. It replaces most of what a bookkeeper does month to month — categorising, receipt capture, reconciling, keeping the books current — which runs $300–$800 a month in Canada to have someone key in what Contrax already captured.
You still want an accountant for year-end, HST filing, your corporate return and how you pay yourself. What changes is what you hand them. Clean current books cost less to close than a year of receipts in a box — your accountant bills you to file, not to sort.
The compounding bit
It gets better on two clocks.
Traditional software improves when someone ships a feature. Contrax has a second clock running underneath it.
The models
The takeoff that reads your walkthrough video runs on frontier AI models, and they improve every few months. Better video understanding and better reasoning about your rate book arrive without a line of code changing. You wake up to a sharper estimator.
Your own history
Every job that closes against its estimate corrects your rate book. That gap between quoted and actual only exists because both live in the same system. A competitor can license the same models. They cannot have your last two hundred jobs.
Three years in, you are quoting off your own history, on models several generations better than today’s, in a system where every department already talks. That is not a feature list anyone closes by shipping faster. It is a gap that widens.
Plain answers
So what is it, exactly?
Is Contrax estimating software? Yes — priced, scoped estimates from a walkthrough video or written scope, on your own rates.
Is Contrax job costing software? Yes — hours, supplier invoices and receipts post to the job, so estimated vs actual is live while it is still open.
Is Contrax bookkeeping and financial software? Yes — invoicing, payables, receivables, bank feed, HST-ready books, from the same numbers as the job costing.
Is Contrax budgeting software for a construction business? Yes — a live budget per job, rolled up into company cash flow.
Is Contrax time tracking and payroll software? Yes — crew clock in by phone, the office approves once, and it feeds costing and payroll.
Who is it for? Renovation and trades contractors running 1–25 people, mostly in Ontario and across Canada. If you are a large commercial GC on Procore, or a single-trade service business doing forty stops a week, this isn’t aimed at you — and we would rather say so now.
